چکیده

Abstract: The effect of SO2 in the photooxidation of a mixture of anthropogenic precursors is studied. For that purpose, five experiments with a mixture of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, o-xylene, toluene and octane in the presence of HONO were carried out in the EUPHORE outdoor chamber by adding different initial SO2 concentrations in each experiment. The experimental secondary organic aerosol obtained in the experiments was compared with the aerosol simulated by two air quality models (CMAQ and CHIMERE) under the same initial conditions. A simplified version of the models was designed in order to consider the closed system of the chamber, where only gas phase chemistry and aerosol formation take place. While the experimental results show a clear increase of the aerosol formed in the presence of increasing SO2 concentrations, the models do not consider this enhancement in the simulations. The behaviour of the models points out the need of a way to implement this SO2 effect on anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol.

Synergetic formation of secondary inorganic and organic aerosol: effect of SO2 and NH3 on particle formation and growth

The effects of SO2 and NH3 on secondary organic aerosol formation have rarely been investigated together, while the interactive effects between inorganic and organic species under highly complex pollution conditions remain uncertain. Here we studied the effects of SO2 and NH3 on secondary aerosol formation in the photooxidation system of toluene/NOx in the presence or absence of Al2O3 seed aero...

Formation of secondary aerosols from gasoline vehicle exhaust when mixing with SO2

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) can enhance the formation of secondary aerosols from biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but its influence on secondary aerosol formation from anthropogenic VOCs, particularly complex mixtures like vehicle exhaust, remains uncertain. Gasoline vehicle exhaust (GVE) and SO2, a typical pollutant from coal burning, are directly co-introduced into a smog chamber, in this...

Aqueous-phase mechanism for secondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene: application to the southeast United States and co-benefit of SO2 emission controls

Isoprene emitted by vegetation is an important precursor of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), but the mechanism and yields are uncertain. Aerosol is prevailingly aqueous under the humid conditions typical of isoprene-emitting regions. Here we develop an aqueous-phase mechanism for isoprene SOA formation coupled to a detailed gas-phase isoprene oxidation scheme. The mechanism is based on aerosol ...

Factors determining the formation of secondary inorganic aerosol: a case study in the Po Valley (Italy)

Physicochemical properties of aerosol were investigated by analyzing the inorganic water soluble content in PM2.5 samples collected in the eastern part of the Po Valley (Italy). In this area the EU limits for many air pollutants are frequently exceeded as a consequence of local sources and regional-scale transport of secondary inorganic aerosol precursors. Nine PM2.5-bound major inorganic ions ...

Aerosol size distribution and radiative forcing response to anthropogenically driven historical changes in biogenic secondary organic aerosol formation

Emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) have changed in the past millennium due to changes in land use, temperature, and CO2 concentrations. Recent reconstructions of BVOC emissions have predicted that global isoprene emissions have decreased, while monoterpene and sesquiterpene emissions have increased; however, all three show regional variability due to competition between th...
